(DANVILLE, Ky.) – The Thomas More College baseball team had 15 hits today (Monday, March 20, 2017) as it defeated in-state rival Centre College, 8-1, in a non-conference game at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 6-3 and with the loss, the Colonels falls to 10-7. Thomas More scored two runs in the first, one in the third, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth, while holding Centre to one in the fourth.
Junior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win on the mound as he pitched seven innings giving up one run (earned) on seven hits and striking out two. Sophomore pitcher Jonathan Breeden (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) pitched a scoreless eighth inning and gave up a hit and junior pitcher Noah Frantz (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) pitched a scoreless ninth and didn't allow a hit.
The Saints were led at the plate by senior center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), who was four-for-five with two runs scored, while junior designated hitter Tanner Wolfe (Cincinnati, Ohio/New Richmond) was three-for-four with a double and a run scored. Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as sophomore first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-four with a run scored and a run batted-in, sophomore shortstop Jacob Whitford (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) was two-for-five with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI and sophomore right fielder Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) was two-for-four with a double, a run scored and a RBI.
Thomas More will return to action tomorrow (Tuesday, March 21) when it hosts Wilmington College at 4 p.m. at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
