Thomas More Sweeps Geneva in PAC Doubleheader

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College baseball team swept Geneva College today (Saturday, April 8, 2017) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints won game one 8-7 and the nightcap 11-3.

With the sweep, the Saints improve to 13-5 overall and 6-2 in the PAC, while the Golden Tornadoes fall to 7-18 overall and 1-10 in the PAC.  The two teams have tentatively rescheduled the third game of the three-game series for May 1 at 4 p.m. at Thomas More Field.

In the first game of the day Thomas More scored one run in the first, six in the second and one in the fourth and held Geneva to two runs in the second, one in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth for the 8-7 victory.  Junior pitcher Brandon Eliadis (Lawrenceburg, Ind./Anderson County) earned the win as he pitched four innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on five hits and struck out five.  Senior pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the save as he pitched a scoreless seventh inning and didn't allow a hit, while striking out one.

Thomas More was led at the plate by junior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), who was three-for-four with two doubles, two runs scored a run batted-in.  Sophomore first baseman Sean Lawrence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-three with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI and senior center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-four with a double, two runs scored.

In the nightcap Thomas More plated four runs in second, three in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth and heled Geneva to a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings for the 11-3 victory.  Junior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win as he pitched five innings giving up two runs (both earned) on four hits and struck out four.  Junior pitcher Brandon Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic)  pitched the sixth and gave up one run (earned) on one hit and struck out one, while junior pitcher Noah Frantz (Crestwood, Ky./South Oldham) pitched a scoreless seventh inning and gave up one hit and struck out one.

Junior designated hitter Tanner Wolfe (Cincinnati, Ohio/New Richmond) led the team at the plate as he was three-for-three with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI.  Lawrence was two-for-four with a home run, two runs scored and a RBI.  Sophomore Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-two with a double, two runs scored and a RBI, sophomore shortstop Jacob Whitford (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) was two-for-two with a double, two runs scored and a RBI and junior third baseman Bailey Abbatiello (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was two-for-three with a double, a run scored and a RBI.

The Saints return to action on Tuesday (April 11) when they travel to Springfield, Ohio to play Wittenberg University at 6 p.m. in a non-conference game.
