(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) – The Thomas More College baseball team defeated in-state rival Spalding University, 8-2, today (Wednesday, April 12, 2017) in a non-conference game at Derby City Field in Louisville, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints improve to 15-5 and with the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 19-9.
Thomas More scored one run in the first, two in the second, three in the seventh and two in the eighth and held Spalding to a run in the fifth and a run in the seventh for the 8-2 victory. First-year pitcher Griffin Smallwood (Lakeside Park, Ky./Dixie Heights) earned the win as he pitched six innings and gave up one run (earned) on five hits and struck out four. First-year pitcher Justin Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched the seventh and gave up one run (earned) on one hit, sophomore Brandon Ward (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic) pitched a hitless eighth and struck out two and senior pitcher Josh Cain (Cold Spring, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) worked a hitless ninth and struck out one.
Thomas More had 10 hits in the game and had three Saints with multiple hits in the game. Sophomore catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with two doubles, two runs scored and one run batted-in, junior designated hitter Tanner Wolfe (Cincinnati, Ohio/New Richmond) was two-for-four with a double, two runs scored and two RBI and senior center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-five with a run scored.
The Saints return to action on Friday (April 14) when they open a three-game Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) series with No. 17-ranked and PAC-leading Washington & Jefferson College at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m., followed by a single nine-inning game on Saturday (April 15) starting at 11 a.m.
