(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College baseball team fell, 7-5, to Grove City College today (Wednesday, April 26, 2017) in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 23-8 overall and 12-5 in the PAC. With the win, the Wolverines improve to 15-16 overall and 12-9 in the PAC.
Thomas More took a 5-0 lead in the first inning, which included a three-run home run by senior third baseman Bailey Abbatiello (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle). Grove City plated seven runs in the seventh inning and held Thomas More scoreless in the final three innings for the 7-5 victory.
Three Saints had multiple hits in the game as sophomore first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-five with a run scored and two runs batted-in, sophomore catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with a run scored and first-year shortstop/second baseman Mitchell Hogue (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) was two-for-four.
First-year pitcher Griffin Smallwood (Lakeside Park, Ky./Dixie Heights) had a no-decision as he pitched six shutout innings and gave up five hits, while striking out eight. Senior pitcher Josh Cain (Cold Springs, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) suffered the loss as he pitched a third of an inning and gave up seven runs (all unearned) on five hits and struck out one.
Thomas More returns to action on Friday (April 28) when it travels to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania to play Westminster College in a PAC doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
