(NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) – The Thomas More College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader with Westminster College today (Friday, April 28, 2017) at Titan Field in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. Westminster won game one, 9-8, and the Saints won the nightcap, 12-2.
With the split, the Saints are 24-9 overall and 13-6 in the PAC, while the Titans are 11-20 overall and 8-12 in the PAC.
In the first game of the day, Westminster scored one in the third, three in the fifth and five in the sixth, while holding Thomas More to three runs in the first, two in the second and three in the sixth for the 9-8 victory.
Senior center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) led the Saints at the plate as he was three-for-five with two home runs, three runs scored and three runs batted-in. Three other Saints had multiple hits in the game as junior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was three-for-five with a double and three runs scored, sophomore shortstop Jacob Whitford (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) was three-for-four with a double and three RBI and sophomore first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-five with a run scored and a RBI.
Senior pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) had a no-decision as he pitched five innings giving up four runs (all earned) on seven hits and struck out one. Junior pitcher Brandon Ward (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic) pitched one-third of an inning and gave up four runs (all earned) on two hits and struck out one. Senior pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) suffered the loss as he pitched one-third of an inning and gave up one run (earned) on one hit. Sophomore pitcher Jonathan Breeden (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) pitched a third of an inning and struck out the only batter he faced.
In the nightcap, the Saints scored one run in the first, six in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the third, while holding the Titans to two runs in the fifth for the 12-2 victory. Junior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win as he pitched a complete game seven innings giving up two runs (earned) on five hits, while striking out two.
Five Saints had home runs in the game and five Saints had multiple hits in the game. Sophomore left fielder Noah Galvin (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Covington Catholic) was three-for-four with a home run, a double, two runs scored and four RBI. Senior right fielder Ben Kenning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was three-for-four with a double, a run scored and a RBI, senior third baseman Bailey Abbatiello (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was two-for-three with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI, Metzger was two-for-five with a home run, a double, one run scored and a RBI and junior designated hitter Tanner Wolfe (Cincinnati, Ohio/New Richmond) was two-for-four with a home run, two runs scored and a RBI. First-year catcher Matt Wellbrock (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) had a home run at the plate.
The two teams will close-out the three-game series on Saturday at Titan Field.
