(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – Second-seeded Thomas More College fell, 8-7, to third-seeded Grove City College today (Thursday, May 11, 2017) on the first day of the 2017 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Baseball Championship Tournament hosted by Washington & Jefferson College at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pennsylvania.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 26-11 and will play fourth-seeded Thiel College tomorrow at 3 p.m. in an elimination game of the tournament. With the win, the Wolverines improve to 18-17 and will play top-seeded Washington & Jefferson tomorrow in the winner's bracket game at 12 p.m.
Thomas More took a 3-0 lead after four innings as it scored two in the first and one in the fourth. Grove City would tie the game in the top of the fifth with three runs before the Saints plated four in the seventh to take a 7-3 lead. The Wolverines scored one in the eighth to cut the lead to 7-3 and then scored four in the top of the ninth and held Thomas More scoreless in the bottom of the inning for the 8-7 victory.
The Saints were led at the plate by sophomore catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), who was three-for-four with four runs batted-in. Senior center fielder Casey Metzger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was three-for-five with two run scored and a RBI. Two other Saints had multiple hits in the game as senior third baseman Bailey Abbatiello (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was two-for-four with a RBI and sophomore left fielder Noah Galvin (Fort Mitchell, Ky./Covington Catholic) was two-for-three.
On the mound, senior pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) had a no-decision as he started and pitched eight inning giving up four runs (all earned) on seven hits and striking out two. Senior pitcher Ken Ruberg (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) suffered the loss as he pitched the ninth and gave up four runs (one earned) on three hits.
