Saints Drop Season Opener, 4-1, to Wartburg in Florida

(AUBURNDALE, Fla.) – The Thomas More College baseball team fell, 4-1, today (Tuesday, March 6, 2018) to Wartburg College on the Saints' first day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Florida.

The Saints fall to 0-1, while the Knights improve to 4-1.

Wartburg scored one in the first and two in the third to take a 3-0 lead, then the Saints plated one run in the fifth before the Knights scored one in the eighth for the final score of 4-1.

Senior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was one-for-four with a double, while senior third baseman Tyler Smith (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was one-for-three with a run batted-in.  Junior catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) and junior center fielder Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) each had a hit in the game.

Senior pitcher Brandon Eliadis (Lawrenceburg, Ky./Anderson County) suffered the loss on the mound as he pitched six innings giving up three runs (all unearned) on four hits, while striking out three.  Senior pitcher Brandon Ward (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic) pitched a scoreless seventh inning as he struck out one, while sophomore pitcher Justin Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched the eighth and gave up one run (earned) on two hits and struck out one.

The Saints return to action tomorrow when they play the University of Mount Union in a doubleheader at the Central Florida Invitational.  First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. at Henley Field in Lakeland, Florida.
