(AUBURNDALE, Fla.) – The Thomas More College baseball team won its first game of the season today (Thursday, March 8, 2018) as it defeated Muhlenberg College, 5-0, in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at the Lake Myrtle Complex in Auburndale, Florida.
With the win, the Saints improve to 1-3 and with the loss, Muhlenberg falls to 3-7.
The Saints scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the seventh, while first-year pitcher Jordan Houze (Lawrenceburg, Ind./Lawrenceburg) held Muhlenberg's bats in check for the 5-0 shutout win. Houze earned the win in his collegiate debut as he pitched eight shutout innings giving up four hits and striking out five. Sophomore pitcher Justin Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) pitched a scoreless ninth inning and struck out one.
Senior third baseman Tyler Smith (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) led the Saints at the plate as he was two-for-three with a double, a run scored and two runs batted-in. Junior center fielder Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) was two-for-three with a RBI and junior catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-three with a run scored. Junior right fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was one-for-four with a double and a RBI and senior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was one-for-four with a double and a run scored.
The Saints close out the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational tomorrow with a doubleheader against Clark University. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m. on the Lake Myrtle Main Field in Auburndale, Florida.
