(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College baseball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader today (Friday, April 13, 2018) against Thiel College at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. The Saints won game one, 17-3, in seven innings and Thiel won the nightcap, 13-11, in 10 innings.
The Saints are now 10-13 overall and 6-4 in the PAC, while the Tomcats fall to 11-14 overall and 7-3 in the PAC.
In game one, the Saints scored one in the first, five in the third, seven in the fourth and four in the fifth and held Thiel to one in the first and two in the seventh to earn the 17-3 win in seven inning.
Senior pitcher Jayson Essell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win as he pitched all seven innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on nine hits and struck out three.
Offensively, the Saints had 17 hits and had seven players with multiple hits. Junior shortstop Jacob Whitford (Fort Thomas, Ky./Highlands) led the team at the plate as he was four-for-four with a home run, a triple, five runs batted-in and two runs scored. Senior second baseman Ben Laumann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) was two-for-three with a home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore catcher Matt Wellbrock (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-three with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored. Junior first baseman Sean Lawrence (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) was two-for-four with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. First-year left fielder Brady Reynolds (White Oak, Ohio/LaSalle) was two-for-five with one run scored, junior catcher Sam Hauer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was two-for-four with three runs scored and junior center fielder Blaise Ostertag (Burlington, Ky./Conner) was two-for-four with a double, a RBI and a run scored.
In the nightcap, Thomas More trailed 11-7 going to the bottom of the ninth and after a run was scored to make the score 11-8, Laumann hit a three-run home run to tie the game at 11-1 and force extra innings. Thiel plated two in the 10th and kept the Saints from scoring to post the 13-11 win.
Laumann led the team at the plate as he was three-for-four with the homerun, a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Junior right fielder Joshua Boeckmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) was three-for-five with one run scored.
On the mound, the Saints used five pitcher and senior pitcher Brandon Ward (Edgewood, Ky./Covington Catholic) suffered the loss as he pitched two innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on five hits.
Thomas More is now scheduled to return to the diamond on Tuesday (April 17) when it hosts Grove City College in a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Thomas More Field.
