Fast Start Leads to Big 66-5 Win for Men’s Rugby Over Marshall University

By: Al Lucas, Head Rugby Coach

(FAIRFIELD, Ohio) - The Thomas More College men's rugby traveled a short distance to play host to Marshall University at the famed Brimelow Fields, home of the Cincinnati Rugby Football Club Wolfhounds, in Fairfield, Ohio. TMC was one of five matches played on the day and had the opportunity to be show-cased on the "A Field" in front of a large crowd of rugby supporters. The "Boys in Blue" did not disappoint the fans as they displayed an electric brand of rugby, lighting up the scoreboard for the duration of the match.

Kevin Root got things going in the first minute, crashing over for a Try (5 points), which capitalized on a forced turnover from Marshall. Ryan Hans' 2-point Conversion Kick put TMC up 7-0 in under two minutes into the match. That was just the beginning as the Saints raced out to a 38-0 halftime lead after Tries from Austin Copeland, Jordan Johnson, Ryan Han, and two more from Root. Ryan Hans Converted three of the Tries.

Marshall took the field in the second half determined to cut into the lead. They did so 3 minutes into the half with an unconverted Try (5 points). Undaunted, TMC took control of the match from that point on. Physical defense and aggressive running by the Saints kept MU at bay for the rest of the match. All the while TMC provided a clinic for different scoring runs. While some players bulled their way into the Try Zone to touch down the ball for Tries, others displayed quick dancing feet and pirouettes as they slid in for a score. The Saints seemed to score at will.

The second-half scoring was spread across several players. Kevin Root scored his fourth Try of the day, with Damon Jones touching the ball down for 2 Tries, and Tristan Harnisch notching a Try as well. Ryan Han was perfect on his Conversions. The Final Score was Thomas More 66-5.  The Saints are now 3-1 in League play. They travel to Huntington, West Virginia next week where Marshall will host them in a rematch.
