(ADA, Ohio) – The Thomas More men's soccer team picked up its second win of the 2017 season, defeating Wilmington, 2-1, at the Ohio Northern Invitational today, Friday, Sept 8. With the win, the Saints move to 2-1 overall, while the Quakers drop to 1-3.
The Saints went up 1-0 quick in the first minute of the game, from a goal by sophomore Ethan Smith, scoring his first goal of the season and beating his defender to a free ball to put his team on the board. Shortly after, in the 13th minute, Thomas More's Jacob Hensley scored, giving the Saints the 2-0 advantage going into half-time. Thomas More held a 14-2 lead in shots on goal and a 7-3 lead in corners going into the half.
Wilmington tried to make a comeback in the second half with a goal by Adam Eckart in the 80th minute, but was not enough to defeat the Saints. Thomas More committed six offside penalties in the second half alone, but was still able to hold the Quakers to just one goal.
Junior goal keeper, Jeff Paulin, had 2 saves on Wilmington's 10 shots. Paulin played all 90 minutes of the game, giving him his second win of the season.
The Saints will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 9 for the second day of the ONU Invitational against Ohio Northern University. The match is set to start at 3:00 PM.
