(BLOOMINGTON, Ill.) - Day two of the NCAA Tournament kicked off today as Thomas More College took on DePauw University in the first elimination game of the tournament. The Saints fell to host school Illinois Wesleyan University yesterday, 4-2, and DePauw fell to Transylvania in an extra-innings game 8-6. In the win or go home matchup, the Saints took down the Tigers 2-0 to advance to the 4:00 pm game against Transylvania. The Saints fell to the Pioneers 7-2, ending their season at 32-16 overall.
To start the first game, the Saints loaded the bases off two walks and a hit. Dallis Knotts singled to left field. Andrea Gahan walked which advanced Knotts to second. Amanda Lloyd got on base from a walk loading the bases. The Saints could not capitalize, leaving three on base. DePauw scored on a sacrifice squeeze bunt in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Laura Finke hit a single up the middle in the fifth inning, stole second, and advanced to third on a fly ball to center. DeDreu hit a single up the middle to score Finke and tie the game up in the top of the fifth. In the sixth inning, Kenzi Dickerson hit a sacrifice fly out to centerfield, scoring Lloyd for the winning run.
In game two against Transylvania, Thomas More scored early getting one run on the board in the first inning from a solo home run by Knotts. Transylvania took the lead in the second inning scoring two runs. Thomas More answered with another solo home run from Dickerson, which would end up being the final run the Saints would score, and tying the game up at 2 each. Transylvania would go on to score three in the third inning, one in the fifth, and one in the seventh.
DeDreu was on the mound for both games today. In game one against DePauw, DeDreu faced 28 batters, allowing only one run off seven hits and recording five strikeouts. In game two, DeDreu started on the mound, facing 18 batters giving up five runs off six hits and striking out six batters. Hannah Sprague came in for DeDreu in the fourth inning, facing 19 batters, giving up two runs off six hits, recording two strikeouts.
At the plate for the Saints in game one, Finke went 1-4 scoring one run. Knotts went 3-4, DeDreu went 1-4 recording one RBI, Sammy Sagers went 1-3 hitting a double, Gahan went 1-3, Morgan Wells went 1-1 hitting a single up the middle, Dickerson went 0-2 but recorded an RBI, and Lloyd went 1-2 scoring a run. In game two, Finke went 1-4, Knotts went 3-3 with a home run, a run scored, and an RBI. Sagers went 1-3 and Dickerson went 2-3 with a home run, an RBI, and a run scored.
