Thomas More Finishes Fourth at PAC Championship

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The Thomas More College wrestling team finished fourth at the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship hosted today (Saturday, February 11, 2017) by Washington & Jefferson College inside the Henry Memorial Center in Washington, Pennsylvania.

The Saints finished with 59.5 points in their first-ever PAC Championship, while Waynesburg University won the championship with 119.0 points.  At the conclusion of the championship, Thomas More was announced as the winner of the PAC Wrestling Sportsmanship Team award.

First-year John Shirkey (Erlanger, Ky./LaSalle (Ohio)) became the first-ever Thomas More wrestler to earn All-PAC honors as he won the 133 weight class.  He had a pin in 1:05 in the first round, a 14-2 major decision win in the semifinals and then won the championship match with a pin in 6:08.

The Saints finished second and third at the 125 weight class.  First-year Cody Shultz (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) placed second as he opened with a bye, then had a 3-1 decision win in the semifinals before suffering a pin in the championship match.  First-year Nick Bamonte (Harrison, Ohio/Harrison) finished third as he lost on a pin in the first round, before then earning a pin in 2:02 and then another pin in 2:29 in the third place match.

First-year Andrew Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) finished second at the 174 weight class.  He opened with a pin in 1:49, then had a 9-4 decision win, but had a 13-5 major decision loss in the championship match.

In the 184 weight class first-year Avery Jones (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) finished runner-up as he had a first round bye, then had an 11-5 decision win in the semifinals before suffering a 6-3 decision loss in the first place match.

First-year Tristin Badida (Burlington, Ky./Conner) finished third at 157 as he had a 12-4 major decision win, a 14-5 major decision loss, but won the third place match by an 8-6 decision. 

Thomas More is idle until February 24 and 25 when it competes at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional hosted by Manchester University in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
