(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – The ninth-ranked Thomas More College women's soccer team returned to the win column tonight (Tuesday, September 5, 2017) as it defeated Capital University, 2-0, in a non-conference match on Purmort Field at Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
With the win, the Saints improve to 2-1 and with the loss, the Crusaders fall to 1-1.
Sophomore forward Olivia Nienaber (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) gave the Saints a 1-0 lead at halftime as she found the back of the net off an assist by sophomore forward Maria Gilbert (Trenton, Ohio/Edgewood) at the 44:12 mark of the first half. Thomas More added an insurance goal in the 81st minute when senior forward Abby Stadtmiller (Alexandria, Ky./Bishop Brossart) scored off a cross by senior midfielder Cori Ziegler (California, Ky./Bishop Brossart) for the final score of 2-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper Aleyna Heyman (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) earned her second shutout of the season as she recorded eight saves in 90 minutes of action.
Capital out-shot Thomas More 16-14, including 8-7 on-goal, but the Saints had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Saints return to the pitch on Saturday (September 9) when they host Augustana (Ill.) at 4:30 p.m. in their home opener at BB&T Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
